We know that our dossier was submitted to ICBF (Colombian equivalent to DCFS, roughly) about 2 weeks ago. This is exciting news! That meant everything was translated, triple checked and accurate. Originally, because Miss J is now in a private orphanage, the dossier was to go directly to that region of Colombia for review. However, at the last minute, ICBF stepped in and said that they would be reviewing the dossier for the official match….they felt that because she was in their care first, and longest, that they should make the official decisions. This was a surprise to our adoption agency, who then asked that their review process be expedited for a couple of reasons (our caseworker said she had never done this before, but the attorney agreed and also signed off on the urgency)…..
1. Miss J’s current, private orphanage is for children ages 0-6. She is 6. She turns 7 in November (same day as my grandma!). That means, if she is not adopted by that time, she would be moved AGAIN. 😦
2. Miss J has special needs. She really needs proper diagnostic work, as well as treatment, that kids in Colombia in her situation just are not going to get.
3. We do not want to delay this stage of our journey any longer than it already has been. We were originally hoping for a Feb 1 dossier submission date and it did not get submitted until May! There were so many factors outside of our control, from DCFS in IL taking their sweet time, to incorrect files from homeland security (which originally approved us for China?), to inclement weather, we need some speed!
So, if I haven’t already lost you yet, where are we now and what will happen next?
A. We wait for Colombia to either come back to us with questions (90% of the time they do), or officially match us. We have been told this can take anywhere from 2 weeks (extremely unlikely) to 16 weeks (also very unlikely). Our caseworker estimates our wait time to be 2 months. If you are the praying type, can you boldly pray for no questions and definitive “yes” from Colombia? We worked so very hard on our dossier to cover any possible questions that they could have-our adoption agency was so incredibly thorough with this.
B. Assuming Colombia says yes and matches us, we then have to resubmit our 797 form to the US government with this update. They will issue us a new form and we can make travel arrangements! How exciting! We were so wanting to travel in the summer, but that is highly unlikely at this point. It is a lot easier for us to not have to worry about the boys’ school and I (Lora) work fewer jobs in the summer.
C. We will be in Colombia for 3-7 weeks. We have the option of one parent returning home after 2 weeks. We will probably take this option, mostly to save money. I will stay with our daughter in Colombia, while Kevin and the boys return home.
Speaking of money…..
-We have not received word on any of our grants yet. I am taking this as a good sign for the time being, that hopefully we are being reviewed carefully and maybe we’ve made it into the finals, haha! We did have one (phone) interview, with Lifesong for Orphans. That went well and we should be hearing something from them very soon-please pray!
-We have been continually able to sell our handmade items which generate a small, but steady income. At this point, we do not have any legal fees left, so everything we are fundraising for is for in country (Colombia) fees. I would say we currently have about 1/10 of what we will need.
-We have received 2 personal, and generous donations from friends within the last week-we are so thankful for you guys! Thank you for believing in something much bigger than any of us.
-I am planning a huge Facebook auction in early July (it will be the first week). We have already received word that a number of people who love and care for us, and adoption, will be donating. You will not want to miss this event. We are going to have everything from Matilda Jane apparel, to 4 different photography packages, to household items, to apparel, to housecleaning services, to hair cuts/styles and so much more! I will devote an entire blog post to this event soon!
